We carry an understanding and ability to create space within us. We [as actors] are active participants in the construction of space, in particular public space. Behavior/ desires/ interests / ideologies of people are enacted in the public realm, and have both performative and spatial implications. Public spaces are not simply those officially recognized; different temporary groups or intentional communities create public spaces throughout the city, some physically delineated, often defined by time and season. They are part of the complex ecology of [for example] the playing field, streetscape, and the water’s edge. Students have investigated, observed, and represented a public space case study [and set of actors] of their choosing. In addition to a careful assessment of the spatial conditions of their site, they have taken into consideration temporal qualities, social networks, urban grain and material transformations. The representation of the research is as important as the observation itself; students are carefully considering how to best capture the particular qualities of the site, its actors, its personalities, its variations and changes over time.
